Operation
Blanket was founded in 1984 by Dr. Saleem Gutta, a medical doctor in
Mafikeng. It was winter and the thought of the aged cringing in such
conditions spurred him to solicit blankets from whoever could make a
donation - hence the name Operation Blanket. The word Blanket also
refers to the basic necessities of life.
It was this dedication that drove volunteers from various walks of
life to form the Organisation under the chairmanship of Dr. S.
Gutta. The idea was to redress the historical bias towards urban
areas by giving preference to underprivileged rural people with
regard to development aid. The focus in the initial days was on
providing assistance at minimal costs.
The obvious need was to ensure that every grant or donation was
invested to maximum advantage. With time as projects grew in number
the emphasis on co-ordination, financial management and
administration assumed growing prominence.
